Newcomer Horse over 15 Hands - Highlights |
|
The horses that have come through the
preliminary round to the top ten in the Newcomers Hacks were up to the best standard that
would be seen at the best horse shows all over the country.
It is notable that in this time
of 'purpose breeding', that almost all of the horses in this field are off the race track.
In fact ... Racing Victoria sponsored this years event - and it indicates that the
industry acknowledges that the show ring and other performance activities are where many
of the best bred thoroughbreds - that are a little too slow or for some other reason do
not fulfill their promise on the racetrack - will end up. Great to see Helen
Moreland from Racing Victoria here to enjoy the day and see 'her' beautiful thoroughbreds
begin their new life. |
 |
Talka and Shae
Hanger give the hand gallop their best. Shae comes from a very 'horsey' family indeed - her great Aunt was
Violet Murrell whose horse Garryowen was lost in a stable fire.
The legend of their wonderful relationship
lives on ... as each year the most prestigious award for equestriennes is contested as The
Garrowen Perpetual Trophy. Shae hopes to win the Garryowen when she turns 21. |
 |
Such a pretty boy -
Nautica (Harry) ridden by Jodie Armstrong. Nautica has done some showjumping and at times he became a little
deep for his new found 'profession'. |
 |
Dulcinea - a horse
who raced in a Syndicate managed by the famous jockey Roy Higgins. He was ridden by Sandy Page - wife of Jamie (Victorian
EFA Guru). Sandy did a great job as Dulcinea was not always as soft and compliant as
she would have liked him to be. |
 |
Dulcinea will
hopefully learn to relax and soften - he has everything else! |
 |
Saturday Night and
Jessica McMahon were soft, fluent and a pleasure to watch. I understand that Jessica took on this horse with the
idea of turning him over - I bet he gets to stay after this wonderful win. |
 |
Saturday Night would
be at home in the dressage arena as his paces are exceptional. |
 |
Saturday Night has
it all ... good looks, good temperament, wonderful movement and a trainable character -
well done Jessica. |
 |
The four visiting
judges for 2002 Barastoc Horse of the Year - Miss Bernadette Murray from Tasmania. Mr. Greg Smith from
Queensland, Miss Debbie Peach from South Australia and Mr. John Paget from NSW. |
