Bates 5 YO Young Dressage Horses - Round 1
Page 1 - Pictures by Berni Saunders

By the time Young Dressage Horses reach 5 years of age, the system expects them to be able to see a difference between a more free working trot and a working trot which is heading towards some early collection. In order to show a satisfactory leg yield (as is asked in this test) the horse must be able to shorten in the frame and maintain self carriage. While this sounds simple, in reality this is quite a challenge for most 5 year olds.

In the days 'pre-Young Horse classes', we had no time-frame set to help us monitor the early work and riders made progress in their own time. It was not unusual for 8 -10 year olds to be doing the work that we now know is necessary to ask of a 5 YO - if timely Grand Prix is our goal. We have all read the ads which claim that a 12 year old doing 'novice level' work has Grand Prix potential just because it has a nice trot! The development of the sport has come about through better education (of horses and riders) and this is also a lot to do with understanding that the training and trainability of a horse is as important as a flashy trot.

The Young Horse classes have helped us to understand the requirements in the early years and so better understand all of the steps to Grand Prix. I am sure this is a significant factor in the improvement that is being witnessed and commented upon by the visiting judges (it makes a nice change from what we heard in the previous 30 years ... "The basics are missing, your horses are stiff and are not correctly ridden".)

The top lot of 5 YO's showed excellent basic training and are sure to be the FEI horses of the future.

1st Qualifying Round
Rider/Owner Marks Score Place
Rebecca Walshe - XI Overtime
39.300 7.860 1
Perrin Family & Michalego

This nice gelding is by the Wamblood cross stallion Woodstock and he is from a TB mare. His owner saw him in a paddock when she went to look at another horse. She talked the owner into selling a 1/2 share and she has been with XL Overtime ever since. He is well on track for a promising future.

Michelle Buckley - Reuben 39.000 7.800 2
M & J Buckley

Here is another son of Rotspon (by Rubenstein) and a lovely type with loads of promise He was bred by his owner Michelle Buckley who also rode him - what a thrill. He looks set for a good future in the sport with this pleasing result.

Anna Fullarton - Glasbergen
37.600 7.520 3
Anna Fullarton

By the Victorian based stallion Grand Kavalier who carries the blood of Rubenstein, traces of Ahlerich and the famous G line, so represents some of the best Dressage horses in the world. He was bred by Suzanne Doyle and was ridden today by his present owner Anna Fullarton.

Adam Vellere - Golly Gosh
37.500 7.500 4
Heath & Rozzie Ryan

Golly Gosh

Golly Gosh is a 'picture pretty' mare by Salute (Saluut KWPN) and from a Ludendorf (Oldenberg) mare, bred by Heath and Rozzie Ryan and now owned by Ken Hosking. She was ridden by Adam Vellere who is quickly making a name for himself as a very capable and tactful rider. Golly Gosh is a sensitive mare with a strong personality and wrong management could mean that she did not give her best or reach her potential. Adam had no such problems - well done.

Judy Dierks - Donner Carina
37.300 7.460 5
Andrea Beatty

Like many, I was a little surprised that this beautiful imported mare finished in 5th place after the first round, but as previously mentioned, it is impossible to see things the same way the judges do when you are looking on as a spectator. Donner Carina was superbly ridden by Judy Dierks - who just keeps on improving.
Donner Carina was the 2005 Champion of Champions at Dressage with the Stars. She has a beautiful temperament, powerful movement and outstanding trainability, so is sure to go through to FEI.

Amelia Kristan - Talien
36.600 7.320 6
Peter & Lindy Wellsmore

What a gorgeous horse Talien is ... tall and elegant, loose and obedient. He is by Box Hollow Crusader and I believe that he is an Anglo Arab. I think his dam 'Digit' is a warmblood cross. I saw him in November 2005 at DWTS in Melbourne and he impressed me then, He looks set to be part of the next era of Aussie stars.

Jeremy Janjic - Django of Cacharel
35.700 7.140 7
Carl Mitchell

I first met Django in June 2005 when I was in Sydney for the AWHA Gala weekend. I was completely mesmerised by his super movement (not a quality I had ever expected in a Friesian). Since then I have followed the breed and find that they are very special and love people. They have lightness and self carriage seldom seen in other breeds and they are very good to watch! Django will not be for everyone, but for those who compare the work against Dressage ideals, he comes up with high scores every time. I felt that his movement was somewhat overlooked but his rider/trainer Jeremy Janjic said he could not have been more pleased.

Stop Press ... The Friesian Keuring (Assessment/Classification) has just been held in Australia and Django of Cacharel has made history by being the first Australian bred Friesian to be granted a breeding permit - congratulations to his connections.

ps - I just bought his first baby Teora TK I am so excited (her picture is on his web site)

Judges:

Maria Schwennesen (QLD), Pip Longworth
