24th August 2002 - 6 YO Second Round - Page 5
The final round of the Six Year Old Young Dressage
Horses was conducted outside, in ring number 1. This ring has a very 'international
feel' with the glass fronted judges boxes. We are very fortunate to have such a
wonderful facility available to us. The FEI 6 YO test approaches Medium standard and
has both flying changes and simple changes at the Canter. The halt and rein back is
also a taxing movement and is put into this test to help the judges assess the horses
willingness and trainability.
The top three horses gave me the
feeling that Dressage has come a long way here in Australia. We must continue to
strive for better basics and more assistance for people training their lovely young
horses. Sadly, there is clear evidence of horses at five and six years old
with faults that will make further progress difficult.
Libby Gibbons and WP Rhythmic Blue. This is a nice horse but
was not round enough or 'in front' of the rider's leg. This will hinder correct
development of the paces. Libby is very keen ... and is sure to try and address
these shortcomings. Good Luck.
Embley Park Donner Isolde was beautifully ridden by Sally McKenzie.
This lovely mare was bred by her proud owner Noeline Mitchell. Noeline is a
very keen dressage supporter and does a great deal for the sport. Congratulations on
your great day.
Brookwood Park Feuerisle as ridden for Elaine
Castellini by Hayley Beresford.
This love gelding is by Grand Isle and from a Trakehner mare by Zwion. Is is
beautiful looking and appears to have a great temperament - I would have liked to see a
little more lightness and looseness in his trot - but he is young, and quite large - so
has plenty of time to develop these qualities.
The top three horses were all imported ... I think
this speak volumes about the depth of knowledge and the strength of the European system.
This is Walton by the renowned Weltmeyer. He was imported by Maree Tomkinson
a little under 18 months ago and she has done a great job with this powerfully build young
stallion. He has 3 outstanding paces and a little misunderstanding probably cost him
top scores.
Maree was delighted with third place against such excellent horses - well done
Walton.
Most sincere congratulations must go to Kerry Mack on
her lovely imported stallion Mayfield Pzazz.
Kerry has taken on a big job - a young, well bred stallion. Her achievements
have been outstanding and shows a depth of understanding that is commendable. For me
presentation is pretty important, and I felt that this area could have been better.
A small criticism ... and a great effort for second placing,
just half of one per cent behind Kate Boyes on Pasa Doble.
Pasa Doble was not quite as 'through' in the second round, he looked a little
tired.
Pasa Doble the outstanding imported
gelding by Jet Set D
He is a great recommendation for the hundreds of years that go into the selection
of the top performance horses in the world today. He is beautifully ridden by Kate
Boyes who is based at Hidden Valley
