Young Dressage Horse Qualifier
& Official EFA Dressage Competition
National Equestrian Centre, Werribee Park.
24th August 2002 - 4 & 5 YO First Round - Page 1 |
| This is the second year of this now annual competition
run by ISSA. It was encouraging to see such a large number of keen spectators
enjoying the beautiful weather and the beautiful horses. The first round of the
Young Dressage Horse classes were conducted indoors. With a gloriously still and
'balmy' day outside, it seemed a pity. However, this competition is a great
opportunity to give the babies a look at the huge Werribee Park indoor in preparation for
the Australian Young Dressage Horse Championships which will be held as part of Dressage
with the Stars in December. The hard working ISSA committee are to be congratulated for a job
very well done. The day ran smoothly although some of the rings did become
late. ISSA thought of everything and Leon Baggot (Victoria's treasure" was
there with his fantastic computer scoring team and this back up meant that scores were
posted and the day flowed very we.. With Leon's this Cyberhorse was able to have the
complete day's results posted on the Internet at 6.40 pm - a great service for riders who
left before the end of the day.
ISSA Secretary Rosemary Dalton had a very
early start and 'ran' all day to keep the competition flowing.
With 4 rings running, I was not able to take
a picture of every horse - I apologise to the owners of the ones I missed. Any
omissions are only due to logistics and not to a lack of performance. |

There were lots of people inside and out enjoying the weather ... and horses. |
Always a favourite at Werribee Park
The hot food van - they come along for the
big events and also for the smaller shows
Thanks guys. |
| 4 YO Young Dressage Horses (below) - there has been a
change in the running of these classes since last year when three and four year olds were
grouped together in this the first class for Young Dressage Horses. I was always
against this practice, as the three year olds were up against horses who would have had
another years work - and at a stage in their life when this makes a huge difference.
It would be difficult to imagine a 3 year old being presented along side 4 year olds and
winning. The EFA have seen the wisdom of changing the criteria and the 3 year
olds will be given an extra year to get ready. |

A most attractive horse -
PR Coldstream Gaultier with owner/rider
Melissa Davies. This gelding is by the imported
stallion Donnerheist (dec.) and from a TB mare. |
Wandhana Classic Silk is an Arabian Warmblood
by the imported stallion Calypso Classic out of a mare by the Arabian stallion
Tristram Amtal.
He was ridden by owner Barbara Geoffrey. |
| 5 YO Young Dressage Horses - there were some very nice
5 YO young Dressage horses, but many of them were lacking in good basic training.
One does not expect to see a perfect finished product at this age, but wrong bend,
resistance, nappy behaviour and a lack of looseness pointed to a need to help the riders
in the early preparation of their horses. It is all very well to breed wonderful
'future superstars' but we need to learn what to do to bring out this talent. I
thought that the top three riders in this section showed a good understanding of what is
required and their horses are very likely to go on. |

Chris Ardron on his gelding
CJP Donner-Kohl this horse is by
Donnerheist from a Kilof McOhl mare the horse
needs to be looser but showed some nice moments |
Woodleigh Rouletto in a very expressive long rein trot ... He is by
Grand Kavalier from
Clifton Court Lucinda by Lucano. J van Bree owns and rode the horse. The
performance lacked a little polish but is sure to improve with maturity. |
 |
 |
Clintana High'n'Mighty owned by
Christine Ruse-Martin and very nicely ridden by
Lou D'Elia. As Lou is known to like horses with a dash of Arabian blood - I
suspect that this most attractive horse has a little of the 'desert' in him!
I liked this horse and felt that it has a great future in Dressage (or showing) |
Amy and Caroline Coleby worked nicely, but lacked a little flair.
Caroline is one of Australia's most experienced 'all round' horse trainers and I
thought that the horse showed the benefit of good basics.
Amy is a thoroughbred cross by
Welton Ambassador. |
 |
 |
| Aabriolet is a Clydie Cross and was ridden by owner Sharon Lang.
An Aussie Warmblood this is a really nice hose with the scope to see much
improvement - Good luck in the future, Sharon. |
It was great to see very successful show rider Caroline Wagner at
the Dressage. Caro is keen to develop her skills and go on in this discipline.
Her horse Quill would have won on presentation, but was not loose and forward
enough to achieve really high marks today - we look forward to seeing more of the Wagners! |
I was unable to get pictures of these horses in the
second round, but congratulations must go to
PR Coldstream Galtier and Melissa Davies for their great performance and the top
marks.This horse was bred by
Wendy Ansell of Constream Park Stud. |
