Class 1  3 & 4 year old Horses -  Round 1
Sponsored by Flowerdale Warmblood Stud & J. Lamers

Aubaine Cameo No 5, this beautiful young mare by the imported Belcam stallion Contango ll and out of a mare by Abeixis.  Emmie Schmul is the rider and owner of this horse who has already proven her appeal with the judges of the Royal Melbourne Summer Royal Show 1998.  She perhaps does not handle the atmosphere quite as well as Emmie would have liked and finished 8th.

No. 19 B.W.P. Minx a mare by deceased Swedish stallion Vancouver ll.  This stallion was originally trained by Kyra Kyrklund and was placed 2nd at Goodwood.  He was imported to Australia by Mary Hanna who later sold him to Sally and Emily Carter from Riddells Creek in Victoria.  Minx is out of a thoroughbred mare by Aglia De Oro (NZ).   Ridden by her owner Jodie Rowan (Kentish) she was lacking polish and performance, finished 23rd.  Jodie and her mum Cheryl also participated at the event's trade fair where they presented their beautiful range of Alpaca garments.

Marasque No. 3. An anglo/arab mare by Karoo and out of a thoroughbred mare by Prince of Orange. Karoo is the sire of many good moving and successful horses including Anne Smith's veteran dressage horse Carillo.  This mare is owned and ridden by Michelle Schouten and today they were a little outclassed.

No. 11 Woodmount Flora is by the horse formerly owned by Andrew McLean Woodmount Magic. This horse was sold overseas as an eventer. Flora's dam is by the excellent performance stallion Balmoral Boy.  The mare was ridden by young Rachael Calkin and she and her dad Tim Calkin own the horse.  Tim is obviously fond of the Balmoral Boy line and I have seen him at the dressage on one of them  Rachel and Flora finished 10th with a second chance at the top spot.

Northern Lisbeth No. 20.Owned and ridden by Samantha Ramsay.  This is another bred at Victoria's Northern Warmblood Stud and is by their outstanding moving stallion Falkland Victory. Lisbeth's dam is by the imported stallion Holsteiner Contact who carries the famous Cor de la Bryere bloodlines that were present in the pedigree of the famous horse Corlandus.  The mare was not able to produce the performance that her connections had hoped for and she finished 21.

Anne Smith was next on her delighful Gracefield Silkay No. 18 by the Val d'Argent stallion Ilkay.  Silkay's dam is by the horse ridden so successfully by the late Gert Donvig - Valuta.  With this breeding, it was not surprising to see a very pleasing performance for a second ride and 5th place.  Silkay is the product of two decades of Australian warmblood breeding and he was able to prove that we are getting quite good at it.

Charlotte Nordgren (Scarlet to her friends) rode No. 34 Northern Montecello for his owner Caterina Corten. Monteccello another bred by Peter Powells is by Falkland Victory and out of a thoroughbred mare by Doublecross.  A very creditable workout for 9th and a ride with the top ten.

Donatello No 12 by the super star Don Ramiro who was imported to Australia in the early 90's and just when we all got to really like him the Germans wanted him back, so back he went!   The mare is by the NSW Equestrian sire Ludendorf.  The horse is owned by S Baillieu and Tony Uytendaal and ridden by Tony. They needed to do more for a top 10 place and were not able to so for a final placing of 13th.

dwts9914180.jpg (13068 bytes)Precizion No 22 Bred, owned and ridden by competent Tasmanian showie Cheryl Lawrence. What a fabulous pedigree - by Wenzel l and out of a mare by Grand Prix dressage stallion ridden by the late Gert Donvig, Valuta.  An excellent performance for 3rd and a crack at first prize.

Naboo No. 13 a thoroughbred gelding by Tin Woodman and out of a mare by Full on Aces.  Owned and ridden by Julie Wilson but failing to produce their best today for 22nd. place.

dwts9913200.jpg (9507 bytes)Capone the latest arrival for the high profile Belcam Stud.  No 16 in the program would have pleased everyone, and he certainly pleased the judges.  Capone is by Caprilli out of a mare by Dallas.

Ulrich Klatte was there to cheer on rider Kate Overton, and he must have been effective as they finished 1st with 804 points.  I am sure we will be seeing more of Capone.

Mr. Harrigan No 2 was bred by his owner and rider Kitty Stapleton who must have a really close bond with the horse who is by the very pretty (local to Kitty) stallion Vaudeville out of a mare by Arnham.  A nice type but lacked polish and consistency needed to impress these discerning judges, they finished 19th.

Kate Scollay Mornington Peninsula based Victorian FEI dressage rider took charge of No 23 Belcam Crusader, owned by Mr. B Warner.  This stallion was bred at Belcam Stud and is by the imported super sire Contango ll.  His dam is by Edgar Lichtwart's stallion Falkland.  They finished in 16th.

Next to go was my absolute favourite No 30 Marine Park Kadett (Roly to his mates) who started his life as Hollybrook Kadett, and was bred by me and my hubby Bill.  Roly is a thoroughbred by our resident stallion Space Cadet, and out of one of my all time favourite mares 'Primrose' who is by Salmon Leap.  I was so proud of Roly who was purchased in July 99, by his most capable rider Michael Baker and Laura Darvall,  to take up residence at their lovely new property Marine Park in Dromana.  I had some wonderful times with Roly, who competed as a 3yo dressage horse twice, and placed with 63%. I can safely say that he would have been the only young dressage horse present who also had a gallop at Flemington and while he showed promise as a racehorse, I thought that he was too good for the race track.  I am delighted to see him in such capable hands and hope that Roly's 2nd place is the beginning of international greatness.  He was awarded 800 points, just four behind Capone.  Who said thoroughbreds cannot mix it with the warmbloods??

AEA Flemmington No. 31 is ridden by Daisy Berris for his breeders Dirk & Sicca Dijkstra. By the Dutch stallion Flemmingh who is available in Australia through the AEA and out of a mare by the wonderful stallion Abel Tasman.   With quality like this fellow our future as a competition nation seem very much more sure,  Well ridden for 7th place.

Michelle Buckley
NSW dressage rider took charge of Donizetti No 29 for a well organised performance.  This gelding is by Don Ramiro (imp/exp) and out of a mare by the Marheine's Salute who stands at the NSW Equestrian Centre. 6th place, gives Michelle and Donizetti a chance at the top place in Round 2.

War Wizard No. 6 ridden by popular Victorian dressage rider and horse trainer Rob Clay.  He is owned by Heather Jones and is by Dennis Crane's stallion Daley K.  The dam of War Wizard is by the well proven stallion Balmoral Boy.  Rob and Heather would have been very disappointed that Wizard placed 11th. which did not allow another opportunity to perform.

Emmie Schmul has a fantastic collection of beautifully bred young dressage prospects and I am sure that she regrets that she cannot keep them all.  Heatherton Park Aristocrat No 4, by the Klatte Germany owned Argentinus and out of a Grannus ll mare did not show his best today and completed his work to finish 17th.

No. 1 would have to be a lucky one, and the rider of Edrom Park Jasper, Tamara Kemp must have hoped that this number would reflect the final placing for her gelding who is by the wonderful Flaneur stallion Thorston.  Jasper's dam is by the very early import Romedio.  Tamara and Jasper were unable to show their best but I am sure they enjoyed the experience for 18th.

Venmar Style No. 33 is a thoroughbred stallion by Venus & Mars out of a mare by Skye Charger.  He was ridden by the very capable Karen French who has had a long association with Dirk and Sicca Dijkstra and the AEA.  Venmar Style worked quite nicely but was kept away from a second chance by his 12th place.

dwts999150.jpg (10035 bytes)Dutch rider Cokie Op Ten Noort did Dirk and Sicca proud with her ride on their lovely stallion AEA Farrington.  By the frozen semen Dutch stallion Farrington, he is just one of many beautiful horses that have been similarly bred by the Dijkstra's.   The mare is by Edwardo Rex.  This young stallion would have delighted his connections with a polished workout and 4th place.  He went on to be tne eventual winner in this class.

Last but certainly not least in the 3 & 4 year old class was Victorian FEI dressage rider,  Dione Gunter's home bred thoroughbred gelding No 67 DFG Nabu.  Nabu is by Camerine Augustus abd his dam is by Pillaster (USA).  Pillaster is the dam sire for Otto Schumaker, who is an Olympic hopeful for NSW eventing superstar Amanda Ross.

Dione told me that Nabu can do much better and she was disappointed that they were not able to show their best!   They finished 15.
