Jumping Final Round B,  27th August 2004 at 8.30 PM
Pictures and Report by Berni Saunders

The charismatic Baloubet Du Rouet and new World No 1 rider Rodrigo Pessoa are next out and they are a joy to behold.  Baloubet bucks and cavorts as he gets set to start.  Unlike many of the horses, the huge atmosphere gets him going and the glorious 15 YO Selle Francais stallion loves every minute of his time in the limelight.

Dual bronze medalist Rodrigo,  is the son of the legendary Nelson (Neco) Pessoa  was born on the 29 November 1972 in Neuilly-Sur-Seine, Paris France. He rides for Brazil as did Nelson.  He came into this competition ranked No 3 and finished as the world's No 1. They won Australian hearts with they took part at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and while they had a disappointing finish, their personality was larger than life.

Rodrigo also took part at the 1996 Olympic Games in  Atlanta riding Tomboy VI, for individual 9th place and Team rank of  3rd.  In Barcelona in 1992 Rodrigo rode Special Envoy for 9th and the Brazillian team were 10th.
At World Championships Rodrigo has appeared in 2002 at Jerez de la Frontera, riding  Baloubet du Rouet, Ind. rank: 26, Team rank: 9
1998, Italy, Rome,riding Lianos Z, Ind. rank: 1, Team rank: 5.
1994, Netherlands, The Hague, riding Special Envoy, Ind. rank: 8, Team rank: 4.
1990, Sweden, Stockholm, riding Special Envoy, Ind. rank: 23, Team rank: 8.
Recent performances include 3rd place in the World Cup final.

Baloubet appeared to be playing with the huge jumps and was the first horse to make it look easy!  He had two down in the A round, but it almost seemed that he was keeping Rodrigo thinking!  In this round the fantastic stallion gave it more concentration and went over with no rails down  They take off after they clear the last in a burst of enthusiasm - what a horse.

Baloubet Du Rouet has 8 penalties and is now looking very good for a medal.

"I think we did super in the second round.  I knocked a rail down, but in general, myself and my horse were in better shape than in the previous round. There is now hope of getting a medal though."

On the jumping course ... "This is a very big course, but a delicate one.  he most difficult part is the triple combination,  You have a little time to recover and get the horse ready for the next fence.  The course is getting touch on horses, but is also fair to them, like an Olympic course should be."

Baloubet can hardly wait to get to the next jump - he loves it!

Above he has just finished his B round and looks fresh as a daisy -

Magic Bengtsson and Peder Fredericson from Sweden are part of the Bronze medal winning team.  The Swedish team finished the competition with the same number of penalties as the team from the USA (20) and rode off to decide the silver and bronze medal placings.  The USA team set an unbeatable time and the Swedes graciously conceded to prevent putting their final rider under insurmountable pressure and having to take risks that could cause disaster.

Peder sits in the world ranking as number 247 and has competed in 11 Nations Cup teams competitions.  This is first Olympic Games so it is huge experience.  Magic Bengtsson is a 10 YO bay Swedish bred, Holsteiner gelding.

They jump carefully and very cleanly but one rail just does not want to play the game and tumbles to record 4 penalties for this round and 8 for the first.  They finish with 12 and in = 5th place.  There were 6 combinations to share this position.

Magic Bengtsson is soft and supple through the front and
powerfully built behind - he is a wonder jumper ...

They make this tricky combination look easy ...

Magic Bengtsson and Peder Fredericson
Just one rail down in the final pressure round is a great result for =  5th place.

The B Round is now half the way through and we have seen some fantastic and inspiring jumping - can it get any better ???
