First Day Highlights -Thursday 20th. September, 2001 - Page 1

The first day of Melbourne Show is always a great day - full of expectation, and the fun of the fair.  The weather was a little bleak and at times quite nippy.  While their was a threat of rain and a few spots of the same ... it remained dry and no classes were spoilt by a downpour.

There were some really lovely horses - even though I am a dressage not, I just love the beauty of a finely bred thoroughbred.  There were many that stood out, and I saw Pam Ahern exercising a truly lovely grey with a beautifully sculptured head - perhaps he will be a winner later in the week!

They day seemed a little quiet to me and when I spoke to Peter Wagner, he said that in the 14 years that he has been coming to the Royal, this has been the quietest that he has known it.  Maybe it was the weather, or maybe people are a little flat, following the recent and tragic US Terrorist attacks.

The horses were all beautifully presented, and a walk around the stables reveals the dedication and hours that make this possible. Here are some of the lovely horses that I saw today.

Clydesdales
clydie1028.jpg (21048 bytes) The 'Clydies' have a special appeal to me and this one caught my eye -

He is Murroka Signature by Balwill Knockout and out of the mare Aarunga Special Lady.
He was presented in the Colt 2 Years Old class.

clydie1349.jpg (19749 bytes) Box Valley Scania - would have given a truck of the same name some competition - he is so powerful.

He is by Narioka Avenger and out of Box Valley Ilana.  He was Shown by R Talbot.

clydie166.jpg (21033 bytes) A p'picture perfect' Clydie - dapple brown with a blaze and four beautiful white stockings.

He is Phesdo Farewell (Imp) by Phesdo Noble Scot and out of Phesdo Mandy.

He was nominated by CM & KG Brown.

Medium Weight Hunters
I took these pics of the winner and the second placegetter in this class but could not fin any reference to them in the program - perhaps someone could help ?
mwhunter1675.jpg (21052 bytes) Such a handsome and very suitable type -

Winner of the Medium Weight Hunter Class No. 1675

They are not listed in the catalogue.

mwhunter1627.jpg (20830 bytes) Second in the Medium Weight Hunter Class No. 1627

A lovely horse - again I could not find details!

mwhunter1675lap.jpg (15702 bytes) No. 1675 - escorted in their proud lap of honour.
