The "Derby" is designed to test the skills of riders. Two riders (where possible) from each participating nation draw horses that they have not been riding during the event. The draw is "from the hat" on the day before the competition. Riders have 30 minutes before their test to familiarise themselves with their mount. This event illustrates the relationship that the horses have with their regular riders and in this class we saw the evidence of some misunderstandings and 'crossed wires' which meant that some high profile riders recorded a disappointing score. The organisers acknowledge the generosity of the owners of these horses, without them making their wonderful horses available, this fun event would not be part of the competition.
