Number 323 - As the grand stands filled and the noise gathered you did not need a program to realise that a home crowd favourite was about to enter the ring.  Beatriz is a very popular local girl and her test was met with wild enthusiasm - Beauvalais was a very cool and composed horse to have coped with all the fuss and he worked like a champion.   This 15 yo Hanoverian gelding is by Bolero - also the sire of Brentino ll (the sire of Brentina) so this is a sire line to watch for 'breeding buffs'.

Beauvalais did a very nice test and the tall and leggy Beatriz look a picture of elegance. The Piaffe work was very strong and was a highlight of the work.  This horse has lovely rhythm and self carriage - as there were no mistakes. A score of 74.56% has them in 4th position after the first round of competition.

Special:  I felt that I noticed some irregular steps in the Piaffe in this test and also some mistakes in the changes - so I am looking forward to seeing the video to have my obversations confirmed.  I liked the canter pirouette to the right very much but felt that the one to the left was not as good.  I was quite surprised when the judges declared this their winning Grand Prix Special test with a score of 77.00% - as you can imagine the Dressage crown behaved like Soccer hooligans, yelling, screaming and stamping their feet - a wonderful moment for Beatriz. lst in the Special and second overall at this point in the competition.  Beatriz will have to get 2.5% more than Nadine Capellmann in the Freestyle to end up the Gold Medalist.

Grand Prix Kür:  Again the capacity crowd went absolutely wind when it was Beatriz's turn to ride.  This long legged Senorita chose music with a Spanish flavour and it suited the mood perfectly. The routine included some explosive extended trots and flowing half pass sequences.  The Piaffe/Passage lack the power and lift that Brentina had shown (in my view).  Beatriz put in the double canter pirouettes - and they were quite nicely executed.  The flying changes were correct and expressive.  They scored 82.825% - 3rd in the Kür and this gave them a second place overall.  A great result for Spain - the host nation.

Number 332 The mighty Farbehfroh and Nadine Capellmann from Germany.  This amazing 12 yo Westfalian gelding by Freudentanser has the most mesmerising movement - it is difficult to imagine movement with more power and expression.  Australian dressage enthusiasts will never forget their first encounter with this wonderful horse in Sydney 2000  As a 10 YO he danced his way into our hearts and he cam to this competition with great hopes of first place.

Nadine rode a wonderful Grand Prix test - Farbenfroh has matured and thickened up a little since Sydney.  I felt that there was some tension/resistance as he became a little too deep at times and I saw the occasional moment of head tilting.  But this obviously did not worry the judges - who no doubt saw the rare talent that this horse has for Dressage.  They scored 77.96% - a wonderful score and this takes them to the lead after the first phase.   This will be difficult to better - and all of the other competitors know it.

Nadine commented in her Media interview following the presentation ceremony that Farbenfroh felt very good and 'with her'  She was asked did she feel that she had to take any risks to gain such a big score.  She said "no, he felt really with me, and only in one canter did he feel a little tight"

Special:   There was a little resistance in this test for Farbenfroh to maintain his lead - I wondered if he had been affected by the 'bug' which I was told was affecting some of the horses in Spain, or perhaps he was not handling the heat.  They scored 75.88% which was third in this phase fortunately (for them!) they were able to hang on to the overall lead.and this meant the German won both the Team and Individual Title.

Grand Prix Kür: Nadine showed her experience and sense of 'better judgment', as she opted not delay her entry into the noisy arena which could have given rise to the likelihood of a very tense horse, had she entered the arena while Beatriz (the previous rider) was making her exit.  The patriotic Spanish crowd were going berserk with clapping, cheering, foot tapping etc and the already electric atmosphere may well have dashed her chances at maintaining her lead.  Too important to risk - but some felt that Nadine ran the risk of elimination as she delayed her entry by two minutes. Nadine's Kür: was a well choreographed and produced performance with no mistakes.  I did feel that the horse was a little tense and this spoilt the softness of his frame.   The score was 83.675% - second in this phase, but enough to keep Nadine in the lead and they become the 2002 World Champions in Dressage.  -  Farbenfroh and Nadine - congratulations, from your friends down under.

I would hope that you have enjoyed reliving the moments which were the World Dressage Championships at the World Equestrian Games in Jerez, Spain in September, 2002.  My appraisal of each horse and rider has been written from the perspective of an A Level Dressage Judge, I feel that it is necessary to confirm the nature of judging dressage!!!   All combinations start their test with 100% of the marks available.  They have marks deducted as and when faults and deficiencies occur.  A little loss of balance, a moment which lacks some expression, a loss of attention to the riders commands and other seemingly small variations from the perfect performance, will cause a mark or 2 to be lost.  All 65 of the horses and riders featured in this report are the qualified representatives for their countries and as such have proven their ability at this level.

I trust that my comments do not seem to 'nit pick' and simply help you to understand why I think marks were lost.
