Horseland National Dressage Championships 08 - Medium Report

Horseland

2008 EFA Australian Dressage Championships including CDI-W

23 to 26 October 2008
Sydney International Equestrian Centre
Medium Championship
Story and Pictures by Berni Saunders

The Medium 4.3 and 4.4 were very strong classes and set up a healthy future for the sport as these outstanding young horses progress up to the ranks and should be seen at Prix St Georges in the next couple of years.

The winner of the two classes and therefore the undisputed Medium Champion for 2008 is the outstanding mare Karingal Anastasia who is by Rozzie Ryan's outstanding Jazz Stallion Jive Magic. Jive is a full brother to Rachael Sanna CP Jac who was sold overseas following a sensational first season at Grand Prix here in Australia a few years ago.

Jazz horses are known to have that 'something special' and thie beautiful mare was a joy to watch. She has perfect conformation of the neck and shoulder and this give her an ease of movement and elegance that I am sure helped her to this outstanding success. Congratulations to all conderned. Please follow the link to the full results for the individual class placings. The horses listed in this report are in order of the combined scores of both Medium competitions and therefore make up the Medium Championship.

All other competitors seemed to have mixed blessings with their Medium rides and a lack of consistency saw some brilliant horses unable to keep up the standard of one test so as to follow through into top championship results. A glaring example of this was Rachael Sanna on CP Sangria who placed 3rd in one Medium contest and 27th in the other test. Rachael was not alone in this and perhaps some of it was a matter of the judges preferences, but it is likely that the lack of consistency will be due to a lack of experience at this top level of the sport.

I am sure that this will bring about a game plan for the riders who were affect by this and they will look to see what will allow them to produce their best in two separate tests.

I was not able to get photos of every single horse, but I am sure that this makes up a good cross section.

1 Tor VAN DEN BERGE 4155 Karingal Anastasia (above) owned by Sharna GLOVER,
M/1/Bay//AUS/WB/(Jive Magic x

2 Jenny GEHRKE 2497 Gitane Owned by Jenny Cotton and by Gullit (Hann) x St. Pr. H. Gucci).

Gullet was found in Europe by Matthew Dowsley and imported by Brian Silvia from the Val d'Argent Stud in the Hunter Valley. The talented stallion was campaigned by Matthew Dowsley who trained him right up to GP. Difficulties meant that Matthew did not realise his dream to get the to the Olympics and the horse was sold to a UK Dr. for Carl Hester to campaign at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Gullit was a bay and Gitane is a very attractive chestnut and proving he worth of the Hanoverian brand.

3 Kate TAYLOR-WHEAT 283 World Star (above) Owned by Wheat ADAM,
G/2/Blk/177/GER/WEST/(World Magic x Galia). This beautiful young import has all.. god looks, good movement and a walk for a 10. He ensures that his talented rider has another up and coming star in her stable as she progresses up the ranks with Oscar B.

4 Heather CURRIE 99 Donnerblitz (above)Owned by Heather CURRIE,
S/1/BR/173/GER/OLBDG/(Donnerhall x Hauptstadtbudh Okapella) This beautifully bred young stallion has taken some time to mature and train into his full potential. It is nice to see South Australian Heather in the winners circle as she has worked hard and trusted her horse's wonderful pedigree.

5 Heath RYAN 2119 Greenoaks Weltman(above pictured at DWTS in Melbourne) owned by Heath's long term supporter and owner of his Beijing Olympics mount Greenoaks Dundee. Clyde has been a huge supporter of Australian Dressage and it is nice to see his interests in the winners circle. Weltman was bred by Clyde and is by Man About Town who sadly lost his battle with colid well before we saw his best. He carried the bloodlines of the well respected German stallion Matcho. Heath has also competed on Greenoaks Weserfee) and embryo transfer technology allowed a competing mare to produce a fall.

Clyde WUNDERWALD,G/1/Bay/173/AUS/WB/(Man About Town x Greenoaks Weserfee)

6th in the Medium Championship is Heath RYAN 813 DP Wedonna (above)another horse owned by Susan DUDDY,M/2001/CH/163/AUS/HANN/(Weltmeyer x Donna Carrera). He is the ET (embryo transfer) child of the Australian Reserve horse at the Beijing Olympic Games, Donna Carrera and from the legendary sire of great dressage horses Weltmeyer.
