Dreams might come true for Hong Kong born Aram Gregory

In Hungarian Mariakalnok Ulla Salzgeber competed to her advantage. She won the Grand Prix partnering Herzruf’s Erbe.

Ulla also took her pupil Jane Gregory with her in the slipstream. Jane showed Dutch bred Piet initially trained by Ulla Salzgeber and owned by Jane’s Hong Kong born husband Aram Gregory. She won the Grand Prix Freestyle partnering Piet, a great experience!

The story of Jane and Aram Gregory is a remarkable one.
Jane trained with David Hunt to start with. Her next career move was to move to Wiltshire and run a yard with a friend Susie Cumine who was a client of David's.  She bought Cupido, a 17hh Dutch horse, who became the horse of her dreams. After an amazing few years when Susie let me ride him, Jane started training with Sjef Janssen and moved to Anky’s stables in order to train as much as possible. Jane: “I loved every minute of being there and ended up competing on the British Team in World Equestrian Games at the Hague and the Olympics in Atlanta!”
Now as her husband Aram bought Grand Prix horse Piet from Ulla Salzgeber, Jane followed her husband to the Salzgeber stables. Jane: “I was fortunate enough to take three horses from England out to Germany for an intensive 10 days training in June last year with Ulla and never quite came home again. One of them was my Grand Prix horse Lucky Star, who is Danish by Lucky Light.  I thought Ulla and Frank would think he was not good enough to work with but how wrong I was!  The first few lessons were the biggest shock to my system.  I have never worked with such a disciplined trainer and I very quickly realised how amazing the difference of being so strict with my own position and correct basics for the horse could change my horse into a new animal!”

When Aram Gregory studied a business degree at Bath University in Great Britain, he was encouraged to visit David Hunt. In David’s yard he met his later wife Jane,
who also encouraged him to compete and gradually move up the ladder to advanced level. His first serious dressage horse, Ego, came from Sjef Janssen. Aram Gregory competed with Ego for the first time at Grand Prix.

Aram Gregory has also competed in the last two Asian Games, in Korea & Qatar partnering Loki, who he bought because he was a half brother to Jane’s Grand Prix horse Lucky Star.

Aram comments: “He gave me good experience but as my ambitions got higher I knew I needed to find a really good Grand Prix horse. By good fortune we bought Piet from Ulla Salzgeber. This has become a life changing experience! Ulla kindly agreed to take me on as a pupil in her training stables. I have now spent a significant part of the last year working very hard to become a better rider. Ulla and her stable mate Frank have inspired me to try and gain qualification for the Olympics in Hong Kong. It would be an amazing experience to ride in the place where I grew up! And to be able to show my family and friends how far I have come!”
