25/03/2006 - FEI World Cup Dressage Update Home-ground record for Anky and Salinero
Local heroine Anky van Grunsven swept to an emphatic victory in the final leg of the FEI World Cup at Indoor Brabant, 's-Hertogenbosch, partnering her reigning champion Keltec Salinero to a phenomenal, record-breaking score close to 88 per cent.

"Even with the feeling I had, you can never be sure of the score", said van Grunsven. "I'm not sure exactly what is the key but over the last few shows Salinero has felt more confident, our communication is getting better and better, and in the training now we have the chance to work more on the details. I really have the feeling that he is getting older and wiser", she said of the 12-year-old who only two years ago won his Olympic gold.

"It was magical", said Jennie Loriston-Clarke, who judged at B. "Salinero was so much more relaxed, so off the ground, and Anky rode so well to the music." All the technical scores were over 80 per cent with the artistic all over 90 percent including an incredible 96 from Bernard Maurel at E.

Edward Gal, the runner up for last year's Las Vegas Final, laid down his gauntlet for this year with second place on Group 4 Securicor Lingh. " It was fantastic" enthused Gal. " The atmosphere was amazing. The crowd was so excited you could hear them as you came in. Together with hearing the scores, that made me really keyed up to try everything. And when it works, that's the best feeling." Lingh will now have a couple of days off then two easy weeks before Gal picks him up in preparation for Amsterdam. " We have our routine now, and while last year his breeding career was new and exciting, he is getting more used to it so he is concentrating more on me in the test.

Close on his heels was former World Cup champion Isabell Werth on her up-and-coming talent Warum Nicht FRH. " Isabell rode a lovely test", said Mrs Loriston-Clarke. " The music was lovely and the horse has improved so much since Olympia."

Werth, who also won the Grand Prix Special tour with Satchmo, was understandably delighted. "He was brilliant", she said of 'Hannes' (as Warum Nicht is known), who will be her ride for the Final. " Over the season he has just got better and better with more experience. He is no longer unbalanced by the odd flower or shadow, he is so sporting, a real athlete."

Ghislain Fourage, president of the judges at C, commented: " This was super sport. The atmosphere reminded me of Las Vegas. People were very excited. Salinero was much more relaxed. He entered in passage and halted" (van Grunsven had walked him in previously in order to keep him calm to stand still) "and the rest was really great."

"Edward Gal's Lingh was back on form, with a lot of expression, and Gal took a lot of risk. Only one piaffe to passage transition was a little disappointing." On Werth and Warum Nicht he added, " This was the best test I have seen from them. The horse is improving so much. The extended trot is very expressive and the collection is also much improved." Jennie Loriston-Clarke also picked out Imke Schellekens-Bartels' ride on Sunrise for fourth place - on a personal best and over 4 per cent above their previous scores - and Laurens van Lieren's " very harmonious" test with Hexagon's Ollright for fifth.

With eight places allocated for the top riders of the Western European League, competition at this final stage was fierce, and of the highest standard. Among the eight qualifiers for Amsterdam is the young British talent Laura Bechtolsheimer, in her first grand prix season with her parents' Douglas Dorsey. "That is really exciting", Jennie Loriston- Clarke commented. " It was a nice, free flowing test, but some small mistakes and the collected walk brought them down a little."

All remarked on the incredible atmosphere at the Brabanthalle. And with the best competition of this FEI World Cup season as a warm-up, at this rate, Amsterdam is looking a very, very exciting prospect indeed.

20/03/2006 - FEI World Cup Dressage: Central European League in Warsaw (POL) Elena's Regal Victory Books Ticket To Amsterdam

Elena Kalinina (RUS) on Royal Black Label

Russian rider Elena Kalinina triumphed in the FEI World Cup Central League Final in Warsaw to ensure her place at the FEI World Cup Final in Amsterdam next month. Kalinina and her 11-year-old black gelding Royal Black Label, having previously won the grand prix, scored over 75 per cent for their rock and roll freestyle pleasing an enthusiastic crowd at the Torwar Hall.

The 34-year-old rider is based at the Moscow Riding Club Pradar, but is temporarily stabling in Dusseldorf close to her trainer Jan Bemelmans. Vita Koslova, her sponsor through the club, was in Warsaw to see the win together with all the family. After the Central League win, and good placings for the combination at Olympia and Neumuenster, Kalinina and her connections are all hoping for a good placing at the Final.

"Their performance was very smooth, with the passage, flying changes, extended trot and transitions all highlights", said Poland's Wojciech Markowski, who was judging at H. " Royal Black Label showed a very balanced character and the music fitted perfectly to the test."

Markowski also commended the performance of second placed Matthias Rath who ran a close second on Renior UNICEF, the horse his stepmother Ann Kathrin Linsenhoff competed at last year's Las Vegas Final. The 21-year- old German rider did a great job to run just a fraction of a point behind the victors.

For the home side, Katarzyna Milczarek placed highest of three Polish riders in sixth place on Lecantosie.

FEI Dressage Committee Chairman Mariette Withages was at C for the freestyle, and commended the organisers for a very good show. For this, the second ever FEI World Cup Central European League Final, a sell-out crowd of mostly young people confirmed that dressage has won the hearts of spectators in the Polish capital.

This weekend the Western European League concludes with what promised to be a tooth-and nail finale at Indoor Brabant. All the riders in with a chance are entered at the Dutch show for this last-ditch opportunity to win a place at the 2006 FEI World Cup Final.

26/03/2006 - FEI World Cup Jumping Updates: Hertogenbosh Checkmate cruises in for Meredith
Defending champion Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum cruised into pole position with Checkmate at the second-last qualifying round of the FEI 2005/2006 World Cup Jumping series at 's-Hertogenbosch, Holland this afternoon. In a thrilling nine-horse jump-off the German rider pipped her fellow-countryman, and brother-in-law, Ludger Beerbaum for the honours while Holland's Gerco Schroder kept the Dutch supporters on the edges of their seats with a last-to-go run that very nearly changed the top of the order.

Frank Rothenberger's first-round course kept them thinking, and only nine horse -and-rider combinations left it intact from a starting field of 37. There were five retirements, the first of these being Italy's Juan Carlos Garcia who withdrew due to injury after a fall earlier at the show, while Germany's Pia-Luise Aufrecht was eliminated after suffering a flying dismount from her mare Hofgut Liederbach's Abrisca who slammed on the brakes in round one. There was intense frustrations for the 10 four-faulters, many of whom were desperately hunting those last few valuable qualifying points, and there were plenty of quick calculations being done at the end of the competition by those who are so close to making the cut for the final in Kuala Lumpur next month.

Reigning European champion Marco Kutscher recorded the first clear of the competition when third into the ring with Cash, but two fences down left the door wide open as the jump-off began. Holland's Jurgen Stenfert and his Jus de Pommes mare BMC Octavia made a stingle mistake in 40.61 seconds but young British contender, Ben Maher, then threw down the marker when bringing Niko home without incident in 38.98 seconds. The 23 year old created quite a stir when winning both the Hickstead Derby and Hickstead Speed Derby last summer and is one of the most exciting prospects to emerge onto the British scene for quite some time. Another talented youngster is Piet Raymakers Jnr., son of Dutch veteran Piet Raymakers who took individual silver and team gold at the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992 with the great Ratina Z, and 23 year old Raymakers Jnr. steered the 11 year old stallion Van Schijndel's Rascin to another excellent round, picking up just four faults in 42.56 seconds.

Ludger Beerbaum, the man who took over the ride on Ratina and who steered her to further success during her sparkling career, re-set the target however when bringing Gladdys S home in 37.03 seconds to snatch the lead from Maher. Fellow-German Marcus Ehning presented no threat to Ludger's advantage when Cinderella rolled a pole in 37.85 seconds but Meredith and Checkmate altered the picture dramatically when racing across the line to thunderous applause with a clear round in 36.69 seconds to take control. Britain's Michael Whitaker was over a second off the pace when keeping a clean sheet with Portofino in 38.14 and now only the home side's Gerco Schroder stood between Meredith and a repeat victory at the Dutch fixture which she dominated in similar style in 2005. Schroder is no shrinking violet however and set off at a cracking pace with Eurocommerce Milano and the clock showed he was over a second quicker coming to the last, but his speed proved his undoing as that hit the floor for four faults and he had to settle for fifth place behind Maher in fourth, Whitaker in third, Ludger Beerbaum in second and Meredith at the top of the line.

"The jump-off was really exciting and the crowd loved it!" said Meredith afterwards. "The ring here is really nice and the best horses got through to the jump-off - there were a lot of long runs on the second track and it made for a great competition" she added. Now she is thinking ahead to defending her FEI World Cup title. "Checkmate is going to Kuala Lumpur so now I plan to take him to Gothenburg for the last qualifier. I won't be taking Shutterfly to Malaysia. My plan is that Shutterfly will go to Arezzo for two weeks to prepare for the outdoor season instead" she explained.

Gothenburg promises to provide a real showdown as the last few qualifying spots will be decided there. A total of 18 riders go through to the final from the Western European League and, as it stands right now, Jean-Marc Nicolas from France holds 18th place. However Meredith, now lying second on the leaderboard which is led by Britain's Robert Smith, is automatically qualified as defending champion and Nick Skelton, lying ninth, has withdrawn from contention. So Michael Whitaker, currently 19th, is in with a good chance of qualification but is hotly pursued on the leaderboard by a group of riders including Marco Kutscher, Geir Gulliksen and Pia-Luise Aufrecht and with only a single point separating the next group - Harrie Smolders, Leopold Van Asten and Piet Raymakers - it's all to play for at next month's Swedish fixture.

YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THE RULES for World Cup Jumping riders from FEI website www.feiworldcup.org.

FEI World Cup Jumping has entered its 29th year. The series, created in 1978, today comprises 13 leagues on all continents. The best riders from 116 World Cup preliminary competitions will qualify for the Final in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia which takes place from 26 to 30 April 2006. The title-holder is Germany's Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum.

The Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI), founded in 1921, is the international body governing equestrian sport recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and includes 133 National Federations.

Equestrian sport has been on the Olympic programme since 1912 with three disciplines - Jumping, Dressage and Eventing. It is one of the very few sports in which men and women compete on equal terms. It is also the only sport which involves two athletes - horse and rider - and the FEI has relentlessly concerned itself with the welfare of the horse.
14/03/2006 - Grischa Ludwig wins CRI in Dortmund (GER)

40 competitors had been nominated for the CRI, 31 finally started in this class. The CRI Champion title went to Grischa Ludwig (GER) astride Coeur D Wright Stuff. Bernard Fonck (BEL) and Roosters Spurs placed second scoring 146,5. Five riders tied for third place scoring a 144: Michael Saupe astride Shiners Vintage, Agnes Ramme astride Whiz A Gold, Oliver Stein astride Smart Little Lenic, Nico Hörmann astride Starlets Snapper and again Grischa Ludwig, this time astride Olenas Diablo Star.

27/03/2006 - Departure of Muriel Faienza, FEI Communications Manager
The FEI announces today the departure of Muriel Faienza, FEI Communications Manager. After 11 years as the head of the FEI Communications Department, Muriel has decided to give her professional career a new scope. She will be leaving the FEI following the 2006 General Assembly to join a Swiss jewel-manufacturing company.

Muriel Faienza's contribution to the FEI has been outstanding. She participated actively in the launch of a new FEI Communications approach which became a reality in 1995. The development of a communications policy, regular information to the media, the creation of an FEI website and the establishment of professional service to the FEI competition series were among the many public relations projects Muriel has successfully managed. Under her guidance, the FEI General Assembly has become a great event for the FEI Member Federations held at the highest organisational standard.

Muriel has also been involved with many other projects, primarily in the field of information systems. She has greatly contributed to the creation of a results database, the establishment of World Riders' Ranking Lists in various disciplines, the registration of riders and horses and the new FEI passports system to mention but a few.

Activities have grown to such an impressive scale over the years that a dedicated Information Systems Department will be created shortly while the FEI Communications Department will fully focus on public relations. No staff changes are foreseen in the short term. Sophie Ruiz will concentrate on promotion activities in connection with FEI championships and series while Malina Gueorguiev will handle corporate communications.
