The bay mare
Larapinta Gretel is still quite immature but has nice movement and
expression. She is by the Dutch stallion Metall. She was ridden by
Heidi for her owner/breeder Richard Maidment. He is breeding some
very nice horses at his Larapinta Stud in Yellingbo Victoria, for
the future of Australian Dressage.

Larapinta Ferre
Soie Silk is by the Sydney 2000 entrant Olympic Ferro. The elegant
black mare was a little tight in some of the work today. Like many
of the 4 Yom’s, she is not as advanced as the most precocious of
this age group and of course in an event which gives a direct
comparison, they are disadvantaged. Heidi Talbot rode well, this
combination have improved greatly since I saw them at their first
qualifier. Unfortunately I did not get a suitable picture from the
class so have included one from a previous Young Horse qualifier.

Glenleigh Park
Flynn is an elegant type but did not show quite enough expression
today. I have seen him go better … but this is the Australian
Championships and the judges are looking for perfection. As with
many of the more sensitive 4 YO’s, they will benefit greatly from
another years work and experience.

Next in the
first round of th 4 YO’s is the Jazz gelding, Chicago Blues. He is
quite immature but shows promise. Modest movement was the result of
this tense environment – but it is part the learning curve towards
developing future talent, and the dark brown/black showed moments of
what will be achieved.

Hollingrove
Lancelot is a gloriously up in front youngster with that real
‘international look’ but the atmosphere created too much tension to
show his best. He is quite hot and I am sure his trainer/rider Tony
Hodges would have realised that this environment would be a
challenge for the elegant bay. He is certainly a horse with a
fantastic future and his canter is world class.

Juke Box Baby
and Georgia Haythorpe were two youngsters looking to add to their
experience. The bay was very nervous and failed to produce the
quality of work that the more experienced horses showed. I was
hoping that the Wild Card experience yesterday would have helped to
prepare for today’s test. The test improved as it progressed and
another years training and experience will be very beneficial.

Hollingrove Chantilly |

|
5.6
5.8 5.4 5.5 5.5 5.56 |

Hollingrove
Chantilly did not really soften and ‘let go’ enough to meet the
demanding requirements of this top judging panel. Hollow steps
revealed tension and this spoiled the flow of the work. Chantilly
is a very attractive type and is sure to train on well.

62 River
Lights |
Nick
McClelland |
|
Retired |
|
Riverlights was
one of the 4 YO’s I had pencilled in for special attention in the
first round of competition. The elegant brown gelding by
Regardez
Moi can move and he has been very successful at the Victorian
qualifiers. However, this was not Nick’s day as their performance
got started with a huge buck and leap. The test supervisor and
commander, Merrilyn Hamilton-Smith asked him to retire to ensure
that the other two horses are not put at risk, or upset by his
disobedience. What a shame, as Riverlights is as good as the very
best when he is concentrating and calm. I’m sure he’ll be back.
