![]() It seems that most of the small acreage properties have a horse or two and there are many indoor riding arenas and training establishments in Berwick and surrounds. About 20 years ago the Berwick Dressage Club was formed, and the early committee meetings were held in a small outhouse at the rear of the Berwick pub, now the huge and modern, Berwick Inn. From these humble beginnings, the club has grown and is now one of the largest and progressive Dressage Clubs in Victoria.
This led to discussion regarding some of the ideas presented by German judge Christoph Hess, at his seminar which was conducted following the Dressage With the Stars competition in December, 2000. Christoph told of the competition structure in the Germany - young horse dressage tests - rider dressage tests - as well as a similar system to the one we currently use. Pictured left is Club President Eduard Rodgers and above, Committee person Jenny Ogelsby. Berwick decided to try out the test for rider concept - and the first of a 'new' style of dressage judging was seen in Australia. The club was delighted with the support they received from Pernille Hogg from Catago Riding Wear, who agreed to sponsor the event, and also donated a beautiful Jacket to the winning rider. Pernille is a member of the club, and rides at Prix St. George level on her gorgeous imported gelding Catago Alberto. The first Judge the Rider Competition was held at beautiful Ayr Hill Farm, in North Clyde. A purpose built equestrian property formerly owned by Steve Bennett (of Country Road fame) who envisaged the property becoming a fist class venue for polo. Some years ago the property was sold to the Hillcrest Christian College, and the school offers equestrian activities as part of the curriculum. In quite recent times, the improvement program has received a real lift with the inclusion of treated pine day yards, an all weather car park, a very good sand outdoor arena, and other amenities including a kiosk. The materials are on the premises for work to begin on an indoor arena, so Ayr Hill will be an excellent venue for future equestrian competitions of all kinds.
Todays competition only went up to Medium level, but there were quite good entries and it was a lovely competition for young horses just starting a dressage career. The great ammenities at Ayr Hill and the effort made by the Committee of the Berwick Dressage Club ensured a great day for spectators. Skeeta (right) had a truly excellent time with her 'mum' Kathy Douglas, who is a dressage rider, but not with horse on this occasion. |
