Bo 16hh by Space Cadet (NZ) - Belle Lurette
Bo, otherwise known as Hollybrook Boomerang, is only a 3-Y-O but has already been involved in something of a custody battle. His dam, Belle Lurette was carefully selected by Bill to be mated with Space Cadet with the aim of producing a champion racehorse.
Apart from a cross of Precipitation, Belle Lurette also had Round Table in her pedigree - a perfect match for his full sister, Monarchy, the dam of Imperialist, who is Space Cadet's damsire.
Belle Lurette herself was a very good racemare, winning in Sydney. She also comes from a good stakes producing family, being a half-sister to 2 stakes horses.
All the signs looked right then, when Belle Lurette duly produced a strapping bay colt, who was initially called Beau (because he was good looking and his mother was Belle).
Unfortunately for Bill, Beau had a few "disabilities" which prevented him from racing and saw him destined for a dressage career. Firstly, he is very intelligent - the sort of horse that picks up sticks and carries them around. Second he is very good looking and strong. Third, he is an exceptionally good mover. But his worst attribute from a racing viewpoint though is his four white sox - not because that means he is unsound or anything, but because Berni just loves horses with four white sox and will kill to get hold of one.
Bill's initial response was to suggest that Beau could race until he was four and would then be sufficiently seasoned to become a dressage horse (after winning lots of races and squillions in prizemoney). Berni's retort was that racing would ruin him and he would become uncontrollable. After a prolonged campaign, with custody alternating between the "parents", Berni won out and Beau thus became Bo, which is short for Boomerang.
The photos on this page show Bo at 18 months. He is now 3.
