QLD Festival of Dressage - Report Page 1

Story & Pictures by Tracy Mayhew & Berni Saunders - Page 1

The Organising Committee did a fantastic job with the third Qld Festival of Dressage - which is an initiative of a group of like-minded Queensland Dressage enthusiasts who each year tailor the program of this event to suit the current needs of the sport as well as embracing the wishes and desires of the Dressage public.  Whilst the Committee had lots of help, the key office bearers for 2009 were:

Nicole Tough

Leasa Stephen

Nicole Tough - Festival Manager
Leasa Stephen - Event Director
Keran Ainslie - Marketing and PR Manager
Gary Lung - Art Director
Carole Lok - Financial Manager
Jackie Hill - Ticketing Manager
Anjanette Harten - Silent Auction Manager
Nicole Magoffin - Trade Stand Manager
Anita Scampton - Raffle & Stallion Co-ordinator
Kirsten McAuslan - Web Design Manager
Jenny Rykoff - Secretary
Rosie Webb -
VIPs & Volunteers, Catering Manager
Tony Caetano - Technical Manager
Tammy Stephens - Seminar Centre Co-ordinator
Karen Spencer - Hire and Facilities Co-ordinator

Dressage is a unique blend of sport and artistry and an activity which promotes the harmony of the horse and rider combination.  Dressage to music (freestyle or Kűr) allows riders to express themselves musically and technically.  Even though Dressage is an individual sport, the QLD Festival of Dressage has given enthusiasts the chance to learn more and share their passion for the sport and ensure that Dressage grows and prospers. Pictured above is Rosie and Alyssa Webb - the fantastically talented and very popular Festival catering crew!

The spectators were kept right up to speed by the informative commentary delivered by the "silver tonsils" of Colin Zeller.  Colin is the dad (and much valued farm helper) for Amy Zeller who participated in the Festival as a speaker and rider.  Amy  stands the lovely stallion Leadburn Rotstein.

Col (right) chats with Jim the hard working sound technician who gave the day a special sparkle with mood music for every performance.

There is not too much about Queensland Dressage that Colin does not know and his contribution was a significant part of the day's success.

The Qld Festival of Dressage draws a capacity crowd to the
Pine Lodge Equestrian Centre in Thornlands, Queensland.

The special guests for 2009 were NSW-based International Dressage Coach and riding instructor Carlos De Cleermaeker.  With international experience as a dressage competitor and coach, Carlos has attained the highest level of formal education of Pferdewirtschaftsmeister (equivalent of Level 3 NCAS Dressage Accreditation) in Germany (1981). Carlos came to Australia in 2003 and was appointed as the Qld State Dressage Coach in August 2008.

Mary Seefried "O" Level Judge - International. Mary is currently one of only 25 Olympic Level dressage judges in the world and judged at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, and the World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany 2007, the Asian Games in Doha December 2006 and the SEA Games in Bankok 2006.

Mary has been involved in the sport for over 40 years and has contributed greatly to the progress and development of the Dressage in Australia.  She works tirelessly as a judge educator and on many committees and notably spent 4-years as a member of the International Dressage Committee and the Chair of Equestrian Queensland.  She is also one of the Dressage Course Directors appointed by the FEI.    Professionally, Mary Seefried has been the Queensland Parliamentary Librarian since 2002 and is the first woman to do so.

Liz Owens - well respected Equine Nutritionist, rider trainer and supporter of the sport.  Liz started out in Western Australia as a champion junior - her dad Bruce Mills became involved with the EFA and as a family they were passionate about the development of the sport in WA.  Liz has followed her career all around the country and has since resided in Victoria and Queensland where she has always contributed to the sport.  She has partnered some very classy horses and won the Australasian leg of the prestigious Samsung Cup in 1997 on her Trakehner stallion, Legal Tender.

Liz rallied and stood in at short notice when NSW guest Roger Fitzhardinge became ill and was unable to travel to Queensland. She also stepped in to Jacque Huppert was a last minute 'scratching' due to illness.  Jacqui was missed by all.

Liz Owens (right) with Cheryl O'Brien (Remi Stud) and Tor Ven Den Berge (the rider of Cheryl's stallions Fisherman's Friend and Lauries As) join in a discussion about bits and the bitting dressage horses .... a popular subject!

It was 'standing room only' for the Fashion Show --- great to see the numbers at the Festival to support the hard work of organisers, sponsors, speakers, demonstrations and the Trade area!

For many, a highlight of the Qld Festival of Dressage is the opportunity to
'shop til you drop' and 2009 had strong support from national and Queensland-based traders who made up a comprehensive shopping experience with loads of bargains to help enthusiasts to make their dollars go further in the current economic climate.

Ron Major is the Queensland rep for Prydes Feeds - he and Prydes get right behind the Festival. As well as being on site to talk about feeding dressage horses, Ron and Prydes participated in the silent auction by donating a tonne of feed for some lucky horse owner to purchase. Prydes - not only great horse feed but also a great company who support so many equestrian activities.

The Team from Aitkens Saddlery were there with a huge range of Dressage Saddles to show ... they are experts in saddle fitting with a sound knowledge of the requirements of dressage horses to ensure the right saddle for both the horse and rider.  Graham and the team have two stores in Queensland and recently made an appearance at the Melbourne 3 Day Event.

A new face at the Festival - Magic Millions who have traditionally been associated with the sale of TB bloodstock.  Marketing Manager and driving force behind the inaugural MM Performance Horse Sale, Annie McDonald said, "We have developed a strong international clientele during our years in the business and have been behind some significant performance horse sales to private overseas buyers.  Our August Performance Horse Auction is proving to be an exciting concept which is set to become a part of the MM support to all Australian horse owners and breeders.  Visit the web site for more.

Horseland Underwood are always a welcome participant  - with just about everything for the horse lover and dressage fan ... they featured news about the sensational new Virbac product Equimax Elevation - which is breaking records in the care of young horses.
