WEG Team Dressage Day 2 & Presentation

World Equestrian Games
Teams Dressage Page 16

Report & Pictures Berni Saunders (National A Level Dressage Judge)

I would like to acknowledge the very special contribution of my
wonderful helper Melissa Alexander. Without her help, this report
would have taken many weeks to complete.

On the completion of the second day of Team Competition the medal ceremony took place.

The Bronze medal Team from the USA on the left Guenter Seidel,
Debbie McDonald, Steffen Peters and Leslie Morse with their coach,
former German Champion Klaus Balkenhol.

The Silver medalists - Dutch team was Edward Gal, Imke Schellekens-Bartels,
Anky van Grunsven and Laurens van Lieren with Sjef Jansen.

The victorious German team from the left Hubertus Schmidt,
reigning World Champion Nadine Capellmann, Heike Kemmer, Isabel Werth and national coach,
Holger Schmezer.

The top three Teams enjoy their moment of glory.

The German Team in their lap of honour. A terrifying moment for Anky van Grunsven as Salinero is overwhelmed by the atmosphere and noise and bolts off
out of the arena with Anky who is audible in her fear. They disappeared
out of the entrance lane ... and I trust that everyone was OK.
Presentation ceremonies are renowned for their danger as many of the
top (and hot) horses are very frightened by all the excitement.
I recall that the wonderful Rembrandt was kicked (at age 16) at a
presentation ceremony andhad his hind leg broken. While every effort was
made to restore him to competition fitness and health, it was a setback
that at his age was difficult to overcome - very sad for all who loved him.

Minus team member Anky, Imke and Laurens held on to avoid their horses
taking fright and trying to join Salinero.
