The Treehaven Xmas Showjumping Show
 18th & 19th December
, 2004
by Annie Lever

The first day was extremely hot at about 38 degrees but did not seem to hold the competitors back.  Quite a few riders camped overnight and enjoyed a BBQ casual dinner and drinks on the Saturday and we were happy that the cooler weather came on the Sunday.  Classes were quite large and the judges, course builders, riders and families all worked together to make it a great Xmas show. The fields in each class were very strong with some very talented horses showing good form.

Saturday 18th December

The first day of competition was going to be rather tough - well not in the way of courses but certainly in the way of the weather. With 38degrees recorded on the day the riders and horses were looking for any bit of shade they could find. The cafe sold nearly every available drink and were staff were swiftly up the shops that night to restock for the Sunday.

It was a pleasing mix of entries including local and state-wide competitors with some coming from as far away as Euroa, Sale, Bendigo and Warrnambool. Sally and Emily Harman were first to pull in and settle down and offer to help setting up - they got more than they bargained for I'm sure when they ended up peeling potatoes in the cafe when they offered to help!! Very much appreciated by Margaritta the chef.  Fiona Johns swapped her role from rider to commentator for the weekend and kept us entertained with her stories and information on showjumping.

It was great for those who were uninitiated to showjumping as Fi explained the object of showjumping and the faults that can occur. Her knowledge of the riders and horses was sound and she did her on the spot homework on many of the new young horses to ensure spectators were kept informed of breeding, performances - well of both horse and riders which made for a few tongue in cheek jokes for the day!  Fi if you decide to give up your day job of riding - yes you have found another avenue to stay in the sport!

The Main Arena view, from the Rotunda

Ron and Pam Lewis who were so professional and very calm and collected in their roles as chief judge and penciller in the main arena. Their love of the sport and enjoyment at promoting the young riders is terrific and it was fitting that they were part of the first qualifier for the Ammo Shootout, jumpingaround.com Young Rider Challenge Series.

The main arena looked sensational due to the freshly painted fences, including some new ones, the great array of pot plants kindly donated by a nursery who want to remain anonymous but would like to support Treehaven's showjumping. The true supporter of showjumping on the peninsula, Adam and Torian Johnston, took time in between AI work at 10.30 at night on the Friday to bring their large water truck over and water the arena thus making the going great and the dust being kept down.

David Sheppard provided a good standard of courses with correct distances encouraging forward riding. The first event on the Saturday in the main arena was the Grant Mitchell Farrier junior with 30 plus starters. 19 jumped clean and the course was set for the jump off.

Alex McDonald, a regular Treehaven competitor was first rider out on Irish Cool Dude and jumped a fast clear round with a time of 39.28 placing her eventually 5th in the class.

K. Manley was third rider out on Orbit who scooted round with a faster time of 37.77 and remained there to win the class. Phil Lever on La Laina, a young horse, jumped a clean but steady round and incurred 3 time faults. Jess Cook, also a Treehaven resident jumped clear but with 2 time penalties.

Katie Brideoake on Zaphod ride a clear round in time of 38 seconds to hold second place with S Charlton on on her last mount and last horse Saddle.Up Paris rode a clear round with a time 38.06 to run third whilst M Joyce on the consistant Chocolate Delight place fourth with a time of 38.51.

Amanda Harvey on Bangalore Bill, C Beacroft on Wondergirl, S Charlton on Adelaide Symphony, J Wilson on PK's Outlaw, J Richards on Kind Regards, M Joyce on Hot Babe, amd Killson ridden by K Malley all ride good rounds with just 4 faults and good times.

Hasting Newsagency, another local business supporting our sport of showjumping, sponsored the 1.0552 starters were indicative of the number of local riders and horses jumping at this level. Laurie Lever building in this arena set a flowing course with nothing too difficult. The lines allowed combinations time to make some adjustments considering the amount of young horses and inexperienced riders. 24 combinations made their way through to the jump off with many happy faces and good clear rounds and many on 4 faults.

M Joyce on the divine horse Chocolate Delight, second to go put test to the jump off with a clear round in 43.64, eventually placing them second. Julie Holland on her special jumper Dark Wing Duck, jumped clear on a slower time of 44.06. Look out for this combination in the future.  Wes Joyce was up for the challenge on Irish Ace and jumped a fast round winning the class on 40.73. Matt Williams on the nice Grey Isle of Rahn, if I am not mistaken a horse by Riverman, was fourth with a time of 44.45 and Robyn Brown on the oh so dependable eventer/dressage horse Sunbury Lodge Pandora was fifth 46.28.

The 1.10m class was sponsored by Paeschendale Saddlery located in Hastings. 38 starters were presented with an inviting course built by David Sheppard. The track was flowing and lines all good so riding needed to be accurate and simply flowing to the fences on an even stride to give the horses the best chance of leaving them up.

14 combinations proceeded to the jump off.  Georgia Clifford, a leading Victorian event rider, on her lovely bay gelding It's Monty jumped a cracking round, all clear and a time of 38.04. The heat at this time had reached 35 degrees yet the horses jumped well and riders took good care of them.   Laurie Lever was next out on the extravagant jumper Ashleigh Drossel Dan, who planned for clear and careful jumping finishing

with a 6 time faults - he lost a lot of time jumping so huge in the air over the jumps and Laurie took the long tracks.  James Harvey on the young horse (DWTS placer) JH Tania jumped clear in a time of 36.13 putting the pressure on the remaining competitors.  This didn't phase Ken Weir who rode a cracking roung in a time of 33.37 but has the dreaded last fence syndrome. ayden Kneebone on Sport For Short also rode a fast clear round 37.87 which placed him eventually 5th.

Woodmount Splash ridden by K Stewart were next combination out jumping clean, tight turns and carefully with a time of 37.26 placing 4th. Second last combination out Leonie McAteer and Stonylea Levitation, one of the nicest young horses around (quiet underrated rider as well) jumped a super clear, fast round at 32.85 to win the class. This horse had a great weekend and I have been watching their progress around the circuit spotting it at Sale WC Show. Watch out for this combination in the future.

Victorian Young Rider of the Year Cassie White, rode a level headed round, clear and a fast time of 35.96 to run second on her lovely bay Conductor.

Ranch House Mowers and Greenfield Mowers from Narre Warren sponsored the 1.20m class.  John, Di and Katrina Coulson had been great sponsors of our Dressage days here at Treehaven and happened to come in one day when the Red Hill

Show was on and loved it so much they decided to sponsor the showjumping. Please support them as they have a super all inclusive service and if you mention you heard about them from Treehaven they will give you the best price possible.22 starters for this class with 8 heading for a jump off. Once again Shepp set a great even track with nothing complicated. The riders had to accurate and were encourage to ride even strides and through their corners - a truly gifted builder when it comes to setting up the right sort of jumping tracks to develop our rider and horses within Australia.

First combination out S Charlton and Saddleup Paris had a very unpredictable fall early in the course with all being okay for them both. B.P Spectre and Ken Weir, who were firing on the day jumped a great clear and fast round 42.70 which ran them eventually into third place.

Phil Lever third out on Offshore rode an even tighter turning round to clock up a time of 39.82 which would be hard to beat.  Matty Williams, another fabulous Australian Young Rider, thought that Phil had better think about that and rode a faster round to capture the purse for the class on River Ash. Cassie White on Conductor was the next to jump jumping with one down and a time of 37.48, James Harvey also had the first fence down with a slower time of 44.63. as did  Emily Harman on Thorough Going and jumped a careful jump off then with a time of 44.08. Last to go K Wilson on Jumminy Cricket has the first part of the combination down and a time of 40.61. finishing 5th.

Linda Sprould and Annie White were keepers of the grassy knoll running the Grassed Arena over the weekend keeping their professional role in good humour. These are two fabulous ladies and a great judging team - the unsung volunteers who pull our sport together all year.

The Grassed arena had unofficial classes for the first day starting with the L.W Marine & Horseland 75cms.

54 starters of all sizes, shapes, abilities for the two phase class.

The lovely Tiffany Joyce, only 12 years of age but a super up and coming rider won the class on GV Peter Pan, only a young pony brought on by Tiffany herself.

Napoleon ridden by K Alstergren was second, Jane Powel took out third and fourth on Danton and Red Hot Manna respectively.  The 90cms sponsored by Hastings Mowers had 63 entries. 18 went clear with the bell from the judges for the jump off.

That fabulous mare Minnie, beautifully ridden by Sharon Ridgway won the class, first out in the class and a cracker of a ride.  This special mare is now in foal to Copabella Visage. Sharon took her home immediately after the round, as it was very hot and she was heard to comment that she didn't want to cook the baby so to speak.  Napoleon, having a consistant show was second ridden again by K Alstergren with a time of 27.53. E. Watt riding Marcus was third with a time of 28.69 and 4th to T Liarkos riding D'Artangnon with a time of 35.44.

By this stage of proceedings many riders had decided not to turn up in the heat and others went home or electednot to ride as the mercury had hit 39 degrees.  7 started in the Rae's Mitre 10 located also in Hastings.  The class was a true 1.10 with even distances and riders just needed to rider carefully and horses jump clean. There were only two clear rounds with the eventual winner being Bangalore Bill ridden by A Harvey with runner up Kato's Clover ridden by C. Jeppe. Ben Conway was third on Toby and E Liarkos, have a great riding dya was fourth on her mount WP Kathleen.

It was great to see James Harvey's sister, Amanda riding again. I had heard on the grapevine that she is a nice rider and today she showed us that she is still a force to be reconned with. She has been busy with studies and I am sure will come back into the sport when ready.

The Unoffical 1.05 sponsored by Peninsula Technology Centre, located in Hastings saw 22 starters with 3 clear rounds. K Taylor with her lovely horse Sahara were the purse holders on a clear jump off round of 27.78 with Ben Conway riding a super clear second round with a time of 30.88. Marg Baker (Mat Williams) and Puppet elected not to start in the jump off.

 Sunday 19th December

Derek Feldman Property Consultants had sponsored the Young Horse Qualifying series throughout the training days at Treehaven

and we were delighted that they cam along for breakfast, to make presentations and stay for the whole day to enjoy the jumping.

The 4 and 5 year old Championships saw 11 qualifiers start with 10 going through to the jump off. It was great to see the combinations riding careful, balanced rounds maintaining good rhythms and eeven striding thus nearly all jumping clean.

Shepp put the fences up a hole for the jump off and the jump off allowed the riders several options of taking a tighter track if wishing.

Marg Baker jumped with one down and a time of 43.19 placing her eventually 5th. Yvonne Morrison on her nice young horse AEA Rex jumped a nice jump off with just the one down. Phil Lever on Modena also had one down as did Sophie Murphy on Cool McCool the magnificent Clydie cross. The youngest competitor Tiffany Joyce really had the class won hands down with a very fast start to the jump off but a rush of blood to the young rider's head saw her wind up even faster so much so that the pony turned up so tight it jumped the wrong fence and incurred elimination.

Amberley Thorpe went for the fast round paying the penalty with one down but still placing her 4th. The third last horse to go was Ashleigh Drossel Dan who was surely going to waste time in the air with his extravagant jump. Not so, the old master Laurie wasted no time turning up tight to jump clear with a time of 40.13. Dean Grass, an experienced western rider, was next out on his super little thoroughbred Somerosa Bailey. Dean has produced this horse over the winter taking his time over the jump club days. He elected to take the clear round in the jump off showing how to ride perfect lines to the fences allowing the horse every chance for clear round jumping.

Last to go was Phil Lever on La Laina, the dark brown mare by Northern Vasilli, who was out for his pay packet for the week. They jumped a clear faster round with a time of 39.82 electing to make the tighter turns and the shorter tracks to win the class.

Derek Feldman property Consultants are new sponsors to showjumping and very keen to keep supporting Young Horse Classes.  It was super that the family came for the whole day and enjoyed all the jumping and will further develop young horse classes over 2005.

The 6 year old Championships kindly sponsored by Derek and Cindy Feldman, who made themselves available for presentations with their daughter Laura, was won by Phil Lever on the thoroughbred Depardieu ,also the winner of the Australian Young Horse Championships in Mt Gambier.

Ken Weir on Peace Eclipse were runners up jumping with a faster time in the jumpoff with 2 rails down. Robyn Brown on Sunbury Lodge Pandora were thris, fourth to Wes Joyce on Irish Ace and David Strapp fifth with Wagners Saddlery Texas.

 The Wagner and Strapp Crews

David Sheppard built great tracks all weekend and followed the brief for the Young Rider Challenge. It was a true 1.20m class.

A few parents were overheard saying that it was perhaps a bit tough but this was the challenge for the best Young Riders here in Victoria must face over the qualifying events. The winner will rider off with other states for the eventual winner to go overseas to ride the very technical YR tracks there.

One of the Feature classes of the show the 'Ammo Shootout' jumpingaround.com. Young Rider Challenge Series 1 for Victoria was a strongly contested class with 25 starter at a true 1.20 course with water tray and two doubles which required accurate positive riding. The inception of this class by Jan Heine is a super way of providing the opportunity for our top young riders to experience international competition and training. Riders can only win this competition once which allows the opportunity for a different rider each year to have this experience.

Phil Lever, who won last years event has already been on his winning trip to Ireland and gained much experience in riding a borrowed horse in competition as well as the training from Jack Doyle, Ireland's leading Young Rider Coach and a top international rider himself. The courses were very technical and the young riders very experienced.  Jan and Maggie from jumpingaround.com are great ambassadors for helping Australian Young riders and the provision of the airfare and assistance in helping the rider once there is to be commended.

The water tray was under an oxer related to a vertical to a double on a curve which proved difficult for the less experienced riders.

Quite a few competitors jumped nicely ridden rounds with unlucky 4 faults and three went through to the jump-off. Kendalee Tigermoth ridden by James Richards from Euroa was first to go in the competition, jumping clear. He was then first to go in the drawn order for jump off jumping a lovely clear round in a time of 50.93.

Emily Harman, backing up from her successful challenge in 2004, was second to go in the jump off on Thorough Going.  Emily was determined and having a crack. A shaky line to one fence saw it drop with a faster time of 45.61.

Jamie Kermond, from Western Districts, riding his super horse Stylish King jumped a professionally ridden round with correct lines to every fence, jumping clean and fast winning the class in formidable form (45.96)

It is nice to note some of the four faulters who rode excellent rounds with an unlucky fence- Jess Mills on Riverside, Cassie White and Conductor, K Lilburne and Kiwi Tag, Katie Brideoke and Zaphod, and Sam Williams on Monza.I'm sure they will be back knocking at the door in qualifier No. 2 to be held on Sunday March 6th 2005. Thanks to Naturevet for their support and sponsorship of this super National event through their  'Allwormer Paste' product. They are supporting each qualifier in every state and a true commitment to a national Young Rider event for Showjumping.  Remember to look out for the Black and Red pastes in your local feed and saddleshops. Ammo Allwormers were given to every competitor in each qualifying event. Naturevet are also our premier sponsor of the final to be held on the 9th & 10th April.

Points for the YR Qualifier as follows

I advise all riders within this class to take a look at last years points (go to calendar page and to 2003 calendar for results)

It is interesting to see how the points tallies changed over each competition - come to every competition and treat each one as an opportunity to gain points - you may be surprised how the event develops over the three qualifiers.

Ken and Vanessa Weir and Ken Weir and Associates were the sponsors of the main class of the day the A, B and C Grade handicap.

Ken & Vanessa Weir, Sponsors & Competitors

Ken and Vanessa are great supporters of showjumping on the Peninsula and really enjoy the Xmas show not only socially but also with their team of jumpers. I have been following their breeding program with interest over the past couple of years and they will soon have a bevvy of sensationally bred horses including many AI from leading sires around the world.

Six C grade horses started the competition with two jumping clear - Adam Johnstone on Woodleigh Don Juan and C. Wilson riding WEC warrior.

The A & B Grade section saw 8 starters with four jumping clear - J Allen on Saddleup High Places, C Wislon on Jimminy Cricket, Phil Lever on Offshore, Leonie McAteer on Stoneylea Levitation.

The jump off was very competitive with horses being given the rein making the jump off fast. WEC Warrior jumped in the C Grade section first with a fast time of 47.34 and one down. Adam Johnstone, with his lovely young stallion Woodleigh Don Juan, opted for the clear round and as they got further round the course and jumping clean Adam asked for a bit more temp jumping clean and a fast time of 48.06.

The fences were then raised for the A & B section. First to go Leonie McAteer had the first fence down with a lack of concentration by this lovely young horse but jumped the rest of the course with ease. (Time 49.69)

Saddleup High  with jockey J Allen also had the third fence down as well as the last with a time of 48.96. Phil Lever on Offshore had the third fence down and a time of 48.04.

Pressure was on Cate Wilson on Jimminy Cricket who jumped a clear round with a time of 48.11 just over Woodleigh Don Juan's time.

It was a very popular win for Woodleigh Don Juan and Adam Johnston a true gentleman of the sport. This combination have been quietly making their way through the grades ensuring thorough training and not rushing expectations.

The second arena saw some very talented combinations strutting their abilities in the graded competitions.

The LW Marine Services D grade class was hotly contested. Firstly thanks to our wonderful sponsors LW Marine Service who sponsored two classes on the program. Some of you know Mick and Gail Loverage from the Peninsula area. Mick and Gail also train racehorses and always help out young riders and those who cross over from the racing world into the showjumping arena. At one time they raced WS Texas now ridden by David Strapp and owned by Pete and Caro Wagner.

Back to the jumping business - 35 starters rocked up on a cooler Sunday at 23 degrees to compete. 14 horses jumped through to the second round. The course was flowing and a fairly open track with the last combination fence 10A and B catching quite a few out - the bogie fence of the course.

Early in the jump off Leigh Shera-Jones set the pace on Big Slim with a clear round of 40.25. -5th. Not long after in form rider Leonie McAteer riding Tim Finn (well the horse not the musician) also jumped clean with a little slower time of 42.28.  Stephanie White was out to show her form as a young rider and she rode a very forward round and turned up to every tight track to ride a clear round on time 34.42 to win. Greg Smith on his lovely young horse Bigg Higgs was fourth with a clear round on time 39.97 and A Jacks followed jumping clear with a time of 40.38 to arrive at 6th placing.JH Titania ridden by James Harvey went quickly and clearly with a time of 36.75 to run 3rd whilst A. Bence went gave the time a good shake finishing 3rd with a time of 34.90.

Western Port Pipe and Mechanical Services are new sponsors and supporters to showjumping and one of our larger business around the Western Port Bay area. They are renowned for giving back to the community in many ways. The afternoon saw many more combinations come to Treehaven for the bigger classes as opposed to the hot day on the Saturday. 32 starters with nearly all combinations jumping under 12 faults.12 went through to the jump off. K Stewart was first out jumping clear in a time of 36.63 on Woodmount Splash fast enough to keep her in the lead. Greg Smith and Bigg Higgs went nicely clear for a time of 39.55 - eventually placing him 4th. Sam Conway jumped with a time of 46even but not fast enough for a place. Hayden Kneebone was out next on BP Nero to jump clear and fast with a time of 38.81 - into third place.

Don Scott on Before jumped a steady and clear round with a time of 45.09. K. Wilson second last to go pulled out all stops for the money finishing with a clear round and a faster time than earlier competitor K Stewart to win the class on WEC Warrior - time 35.91. Hayden Kneebone on Sport For Short rode a nice clear round with a slower time of 42.12 to conclude the class.  Ranch House and Greenfield Mowers representative for the day Katrina Coulson came along to present prizes, money, caps and ribbons and was delighted to see many of the hats being worn around the place from previous days winners and placegetters in the 1.20sm class. Go and visit their store for any of your farming or property maintenance gear - from brushcutters-ride on mowers and they offer a sensational service for your equipment and are really down to earth people. Regency Drive, Narre Warren. Support those who support you.

This class was enjoyed by the many riders and as it was the last class a lot of heckling and laughing was had by those under the shade of the large trees. 11 starters saw quite a few having the last fence down - drawing the oohs and aahs and heckling.6 faced the judges for the jump off with K Wilson being the victor on her inform mount Jimminy Cricket-time 37.50 with Leonie McAteer on Stoneylea Levitation running second with a time of 40.19. The last three placings were eight faulters 3rd to Kilkari ridden by K Manley 40.60. All American Boy ridden by Amberley Thorpe on 44.85 and 5th to Kiwiboy and Kylie Lilburne 59.82          Judges: Annie White and Linda Sproule

Thank you to those wonderful hardworking volunteers from the club, to those young riders Hayden Kneebone, Tom Smith, Michael Webster   and many others who helped change the course with Shepp. Thanks to Ellen Wilson who took over the board, calling up riders and to Des Tuppy for on course assistance on the Sunday in Ring 2.

Cheers to those wonderful parents of Amberley Thorpe, always supporters here at Treehaven, who jumped to the task on the call up board in the main ring as well supported at times by Vicki Kneebone and Peggy Mills. Thanks also to Julie Scott -a great job with the administration of the entries.

It was a fun Xmas show and we even had a visit from the local Tyabb Volunteer Firefighters to give sweets to the kids - and some big kids too!
