Garryowen Perpetual Trophy - Report and Pictures Page 2
2004 Royal Melbourne Show
19th - 29th September, 2004

'Garryowen Perpetual Trophy' for the
Best Equestrienne Turnout
Highlights of the Winner
WS Black Label and Caroline Wagner
by Berni Saunders
Page 2

Caroline Wagner probably needs no introduction to those who have followed the Garryowen for a period of time.  She is a previous winner and a very successful show competitor ... she always has a lovely horse to partner her outstanding performances.  Much of the Garryowen magic is built around the tale of tragedy and the special bond of a woman and her horse.  These simple principals inspire competitors, who strive to reach the same level of respect for their all round equestrian skill, as the famed Violet Murrell when she rode her special horse Garryowen over 70 years ago.

The leading combinations have demonstrated an ability to make certain 'synergies' work for them, and the Garryowen is a career highlight for many young Australian lady riders and has captured the imagination of the public who relate this event to the highest level of equestrian achievement.

For those with an interest in dates, timing and other quirky  coincidences .... this year's winner Caroline Wagner also won this event 10 years ago when the 'Garryowen' celebrated it's 60th birthday. Caroline is a great Australian equestrienne with an eye for detail and understanding of quality ... and for me, it is no coincidence that these skills have been rewarded today.  By remaining at the top of her field, Caroline has made a statement about her training and riding abilities and we all commend her great achievement.  Maree Tomkinson gave 44 for riding ...  and for manners and paces, Black Label was awarded 36.

As mentioned on the previous page - I have felt that Caroline was not always been given the correct recognition for her good work.  I am sure that she is pleased to find a judging panel who appraised the quality of her horse, riding ability, saddlery. costume and overall presentation - a very demanding test which etches her name in the record books and remembers her forever.

This page is devoted to the winner - a glorious black gelding with 4 white sox.  Caroline purchased him in Queensland about 4 years ago and together they have made history.

The best result for a Garryowen 'first timer' went to Erikson & Beggs' nomination - Glitz.  The handsome chestnut looked a picture and is sure to go on.

Glitz moves out to take his moment of glory ... best mark for
a first time at the Garryowen.

Glitz - best first time performer.

Warming up, I felt that WS (stands for Wagners Saddlery) Black Label was a little tight and rushing.  At first I felt that he was not up to the form that I was expecting.

Caro gave him  a good 20 minutes from the time she left the  line-up to when
they commenced their 'official' workout - Black Label needed this time
to soften so that he could show expression and good definition between
the paces.  Show horses are being asked to work more like dressage horses.

WS Black Label is now showing that special posture and carriage that
makes the 'real show horses' special' ...  and great to watch.

Caroline looked fabulous and I am sure that every stitch of her costume
was perfect.  Wagners Saddlery 'dresses' many of the competitors and
Caroline is an expert when it comes to Garryowen costume and turnout.

Good definition between extended and collected paces
 - particularly in the canter.

WS Black Label - so elegant and perfectly marked.

The officials and sponsor congratulate the event winners.

Caroline and WS Black Label - both beaming !

Caro and Black Label do their Lap of Honour!

Caroline's husband Peter (Wagner) gives her a congratulatory kiss
as they make their way back to the stables.  Congratulations from us too  !!!

Caroline announced at the presentation that this would be her last appearance
in the 'Garryowen' and she retires as a four times winner.  Only Helen Heagney & Vicky Lawrie can top this amazing record.  They  stand as the record holders with 5 wins to their credit.

The RAS conducted a 70th birthday lunch in the new Epicurean room and many of the past winners were invited to come and share the occasion with the girls from the 2004 event.  I am sure some happy memories were shared.  Well done.

I have many pictures from the Garryowen space has prevented me from publishing
them all - if you are interested in viewing proofs e-mail me on
