11th and 12th February 2006

The SA Horse of the Year show could not have been held under better weather conditions.  Sunny but not hot for both days it gave South Australia's best hacks the ideal conditions to show their talents.

This year the judges were Lorelei Payne from Queensland, who judged at the Adelaide Royal a number of years ago in addition to judging throughout Australia and New Zealand and is a successful Quarter Horse breeder,  Raymond Butler from Victoria, who has judged at Royal throughout Australia and is involved in the breeding of successful Riding Ponies, and Sally Watkins from NSW, who judged the hacks and galloways at the 2003 Adelaide Royal, has judged throughout Australia and New Zealand and is a very successful show exhibitor.  The trio of judges oversaw the main arena while Pam Wilson, who has judged throughout Australia and New Zealand and is a very successful local Riding Pony breeder, took control of the Owner/Rider classes on Saturday afternoon and the Leading Pony class on Sunday.

The first class of the show was the Rider under 9 years.  In a strong class of 8 competitors the decision went to 8yo Nicole Metcalfe riding Haley Park Fairy Secrets with second place going to Jasmine Anderson and Rivington Time Frame with 6yo Hannah Wollatt riding Dalpura Pearl in third.

The second class was the SA Champion Junior Rider under 14 years where Shannon Graham was declared the winner from Tessa Hughes riding Mirinda Kingsway.  It was the second year in a row that Shannon Graham has taken the champion ribbon in this class.

Next was the SA Champion Junior Rider 14-18 years which went to Melissa Karutz riding Sanburn Park Sorrento with Cooper Oborn riding At Last in second place and Lucy Forrest riding Entice third.  Melissa Karutz also took out this event in 2005 and was the Champion Junior Rider under 14 years in 2002 and 2001.

The SA Champion Senior Rider was awarded to Margot Haynes riding Grazier from Rachel Lawrie with Charlotte Thomson riding Gryffindor third.  Margot Haynes has also won this class in 2005, 2003 and 2000 while Rachel Lawrie has previously won the class in 2002 and 2001.

In the first of the afternoon classes in the main arena a small but quality group were judged for Newcomer Pony of the Year with the top award going to Ashlee Anderson's Kolbeach Memoir from M Fricker's Corumbene Treasure with Gemma Salvestro's Kenda Park Snowflake third.  Ashlee Anderson also took out the Sportsmanship award.

In the SA Newcomer Galloway of the Year KB Marine ridden by Margot Haynes was awarded the Champion sash from Willowcroft Night Music ridden by Leanne Donoghue with Sanlirra Patriot & Kylie Baverstock third.  The Sportmanship award went to I Barker riding Braefoot Park Stagelights.

Kelli Probert's Sanlirra Stagelight was successful in the Newcomer Large Pony of the Year with Sue Bulling's Sanlirra Just Gossip second and I Barker's Kolbeach Stars third.  The Sportmanship Award went to Mikaela Castley.

The Newcomer Show Horse of the Year was taken out by Samantha Kennedy's Famous from Amelia Rackham's Ashbury with Leanne Donoghue's Next Chapter third.  Famous was sold as a yearling at the Queensland Magic Millions for $135,000 and raced as Wontime but after running fifth at Group 2 level as a 2yo showed he wasn't suited to that career.  M Halliday's Armand is only a 3yo but showed promise for the future being chosen for the top ten in a large class.

The first of the Owner/Rider Classes was the Show Horse where Amelia Rackham's Ashbury was named Champion from M Fricker's Riverdance with Lucy Forrest's Entice third.  Third placed Entice raced as Nikeric and won three races and was placed 7 times from 23 starts.  Rebecca Hawkes took out the Sponsorship Award.

The Owner Rider Small Pony was next with Nicholas Lundquist's My Haven Windsong successful from Jasmine Anderson's Rivington Time Frame with Dayna Walker-Matthews Langtree Lilly Pilly third.  Nicholas Lundquist was also awarded the Sportsmanship Award.

The Owner Rider Large Pony was next and Ashlee Anderson continued with her second success of the day with Langtree Jean Pierre awarded Champion from Lucy Forrest's Weston Bank Note with Dani Jolly-Blacket's Sanlirra Stageshow third.

In the final class of the day Louisa Johns was successful with Barrabool Superga in the Owner Rider Galloway Hack.  Second place went to Kirreway Your Colours & Naomi Karutz with Sabrina Jaeschke & KB Marine third.
